God of grace and wonder:
We gather today in peace, with gladness of heart. We thank you for this opportunity to gather together in your name as we pray for peace and mark the service of all who work for it – whatever their vocation may be, and however you have chosen to work through them.
Yet, we know the peace and freedom that we enjoy is but a prayer for so many across this world.
Lord, we particularly ask that you be present with the women and men of the armed forces as they face the dangers of conflict and the pain of separation from family and friends. Comfort and guide them so that they may find rest in you.
We pray, too, for the merchant sailors on this world’s seas and lakes. As they navigate storms and hostile waters, grant them peace and security. May they, through your love, find safe harbors.
And, Lord, we pray today for the many families – spouses, children, parents – who are separated from their loved ones due to deployments, conflict, or the demands of their trade. Help them to sense the security of your presence and care until they may be reunited with those they love.
Almighty God we pray especially for our sisters and brothers who are persecuted and oppressed because of their faith in you. While we thank you for the freedom to worship and pray together here, Lord, we know that so many are facing death, torture, and fear all because they profess Jesus as Lord. Help them to find your face in their suffering, and give them the hope of the resurrection, and the peace that comes from knowing that a Christian cannot be killed.
And, Lord, we ask you to be with the ill, the impoverished, and the fearful in this community and within the families of those present here. You are a God who suffers both with and for us. Help those suffering to keep the eternal and enduring faith of the love of Jesus Christ.
And Lord, we thank you for your ministers, pastors, and chaplains – particularly Lieutenants Green and Lowe here today. Be with them as they seek to bring the light of Christ into places of darkness and fear.
For all those in peril, Lord, we pray calm winds and fair seas. And we pray with thanksgiving for the undeserved gift of your Son Jesus Christ, who – in faith – defeats sin, death, and fear. Amen.
